Middlesbrough are edging closer to completing a deal to sign former Arsenal forward Yaya Sanogo according to Football Insider.

Sanogo is currently a free-agent, after not renewing his contract with French side Toulouse at the end of the 2019/20 league campaign.

The 27-year-old scored four goals in 16 appearances last term for Toulouse, and he'll be hoping he can hit the ground running back in English football.

Sanogo scored three goals in eight appearances for Charlton Athletic in the Championship, in what was his last spell in the second-tier, before opting to sign for Toulouse from Arsenal in 2017.

Football Insider claim that Sanogo's medical is set to take place in the near future, ahead of the new Championship season this term.

Middlesbrough finished 17th in the second-tier standings last season, and Neil Warnock is clearly keen to add to his squad at the earliest of opportunities.

They take on newly-relegated Watford in their opening match of the 2020/21 Championship campaign, in what is certain to be a tricky test on Friday evening at Vicarage Road.

The Verdict:

This could prove to be a shrewd bit of business by Neil Warnock's side.

Middlesbrough already have some strong options available to them in attack in Britt Assombalonga and Ashley Fletcher, but Warnock clearly wants competition for their places in the starting XI.

That's not necessarily a bad thing though, as it'll see each player pushing hard to secure a spot in the starting line-up for Middlesbrough this season.

If he can hit the ground running, then this will be a very good signing on a free transfer.
