Middlesbrough have identified Jordan Hugill as a transfer target, with Tony Pulis set to rival Aston Villa for the striker’s signature this summer.

According to TEAMtalk, Boro are looking to finalise a deal for Martyn Waghorn before turning their attention to Hugill, who is now on Pulis’ radar ahead of the new Sky Bet Championship season.

Hugill joined West Ham United in a multi-million pound deal back in Janaury, but has found his opportunities limited in the Premier League and looks surplus to requirements at this stage.

The 26-year-old is a Middlesbrough supporter, and is reportedly keen on returning to Teesside, despite Villa’s interest, to boost the numbers within Pulis’ squad.

Prior to his move to West Ham, Hugill established himself as one of the Championship’s top strikers during his time at Preston North End.

Over the course of three-and-a-half years at Deepdale, Hugill made 114 appearances across all competitions, with the powerful striker returning 30 goals, including 10 during the first-half of last season.

Boro are looking to bolster their attacking options after losing Patrick Bamford yesterday.

The 24-year-old swapped Teesside for Leeds, with the striker linking up with the Elland Road club on a four-year deal.

The Verdict

Hugill would be a great addition to Boro’s squad.

The 26-year-old would suit Pulis’ style and would get plenty of chances from the likes of Adama Traore and Stewart Downing.

If Boro can get this deal over the line, along with Waghorn, it will cushion the blow of losing Bamford to a rival.
