Middlesbrough reportedly make transfer breakthrough

Published

on

Middlesbrough are edging closer to the signing of Charlton’s Anfernee Dijksteel, according to journalist Richard Cawley.

He reports that after seeing multiple bids turned down for the defender this summer, Boro have finally submitted an offer which matches Charlton’s asking price, and therefore they should accept.

With just a few days remaining in the window both clubs will have to act quickly in order to get the deal across the line, that is if the player wants to make the move, which he likely will.

Dijksteel has never played in the Championship before and by joining Boro he would be playing for a team that is likely to challenge for the play-offs – as they have done in recent years, rather than Charlton who will be happy to just consolidate.

Ryan Shotton is currently the only right-back in Jonathan Woodgate’s squad, so there is little surprise that they were desperate to get this deal done by meeting the asking price.

The Verdict

Dijksteel is an attacking full-back who should offer a lot to Boro and make them more of an expansive threat on the ball.

He is effective on the ball and should support the likes of Marvin Johnson and Lewis Wing when going forward, and compared to Howson he is a much more assured presence in defence.

He will provide much-needed competition to Ryan Shotton too, but he should also learn from him and players like George Friend to not only become a better player, but understand what it takes to play under Woodgate and a club like Middlesbrough.
