Sky Bet Championship side Middlesbrough remain interested in signing former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel, according to reports from Teesside Live.

Reports recently claimed that the Nigerian midfielder had been turned down by Tony Pulis, despite Boro initially declaring an interest in signing the experienced 31-year old as well as Premier League side Crystal Palace.

But reports now claim that a move for the former Chelsea star could be back on the cards, with the North East club holding further talks with the Premier League winner on Monday afternoon, after conversations were also had last week.

Obi Mikel has been without a club since his departure from Chinese club Tianjin Teda earlier this month, where he made 31 appearances for the club following his move from Chelsea 2017.

The 31-year-old won nine major trophies during his 11-year stint at Stamford Bridge and would offer strength in depth to a Middlesbrough side still pushing for promotion to the top flight.

Pulis' men currently sit 5th in the Sky Bet Championship table, three points clear of 7th place after going unbeaten in their last four league games.

The Verdict

What a signing and what a coup Obi Mikel would be for Middlesbrough in their quest for promotion.

He has a wealth of experience under his belt and would be a very physical, powerful player in the middle of the park for Boro.

He'd offer something different to what they already have, and if Pulis pulls it off, it could be a tremendous signing.
