According to Sky Sports’ Keith Downie, Burnley have moved to sign Gibson, offering Middlesbrough £12m for the centre-back’s service.

Gibson has come through the ranks at the Riverside Stadium, and at the age of just 25, he has gone on to make 203 appearances for the Teessiders across all competitions.

The centre-back has played in the Premier League and Championship for Boro, impressing at both levels.

During the 2016/17 campaign, Gibson was ever-present for Boro in the Premier League, featuring in all 38 fixtures and impressing. The 25-year-old’s efforts, despite Boro’s relegation, put him on the verge of the England squad.

Last summer, Gibson stayed loyal to Middlesbrough, playing a crucial role as the Teessiders challenged for promotion in the Championship under Tony Pulis.

Gibson against featured regularly, making 47 league appearances for Boro, helping them to fifth and the play-off semi-finals.

The Boro defender couldn’t help his club to promotion, however, with Boro now facing a second successive year in the Championship.

Whilst Boro and Gibson are currently preparing for another year in the Championship, Burnley are looking to qualify for the next stage of the Europa League this evening.

The Verdict

Gibson is an excellent defender, who would improve Burnley’s squad.

This offer might come a little below Boro’s valuation, as Gibson is highly-rated on Teesside.

It will be interesting to see if the boyhood Middlesbrough fan wants to take the step back up into the Premier League this summer or stay loyal to his hometown club.
