Middlesbrough have activated a clause to extend Fabio's contract, according to the official site.

The Brazilian full-back has been at the club for two seasons after joining from Cardiff City, but has been limited to a squad role with 46 league appearances during that time. However, he will be staying for another year at least due to this clause in his contract being activated.

George Friend and Ryan Shotton occupy the first-team roles for the full-back positions, but Fabio has made substitute appearances in four of the last five games. His attacking contributions have been limited one goal and an assist this season due to the nature of his role, but he has been a consistent performer for the side when needed.

The Verdict

This is a smart move from Boro because Fabio is a useful squad player to have due to being happy to have a limited role. He provides plenty of depth due to being able to cover for either full-back.

However, the fact that the clause was activated rather than offering a new contract suggests that he doesn't have a long-term future at the club unless he has a stunning season. This could also represent some safe decision-making from the board just in case they don't achieve promotion, so that they are prepared for another season in the Championship.
