The January transfer window is not far away and for Middlesbrough it could be a crucial time of the season.

Jonathan Woodgate's side are sitting in 20th place in the Championship, and while results have picked up recently, there's still plenty of work to do to move them up the table.

Injuries have played a huge part in Middlesbrough's struggles this term, but those frailties have only emphasised the need for attacking reinforcements, something which is thought to be a top priority in January.

According to reports from Football Insder, the Teessiders are plotting a move for Peterborough United star Marcus Maddison.

The 26-year-old has taken League One by storm for the Posh after scoring 10 goals and getting eight assists in 20 games so far this term.

A playmaker by trade, Maddison is out of contract at the end of the season and could be available if Middlesbrough meet a release clause in his contract which is thought to be £2.6million.

The verdict

Marcus Maddison could be the perfect fit for Middlesbrough.

As well as being an affordable option, the 26-year-old has an excellent track record in League One with Peterborough United and will certainly add a creative element to Jonathan Woodgate's side.

Interest is likely to be high in the former Newcastle academy star, meaning that the Teessiders could face competition.
