Middlesbrough were knocked out of the FA Cup after falling to a 2-1 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur.

The hosts took advantage of some poor play from the Teessiders as Giovani Lo Celso and Erik Lamela gave them a two-goal lead early doors.

Middlesbrough looked to push their way back into the game as Lewis Wing and Ashley Fletcher had decent chances, but it was George Saville who made for a nervy ending with an excellent effort from range.

Here's how we rated Jonathan Woodgate's side.

Tomas Mejias – 5

Made a poor error in the opening minutes allowing Spurs to take a lead. Looked unsure on the ball but made a couple of decent saves.

Djed Spence – 7

Struggled to contain Ryan Sessegnon. Provided a threat going forward but like many, struggled defensively.

Jonny Howson – 7

Held onto the ball too long at times putting his teammates under pressure. Grew into the game and led by example as it went on.

Dael Fry – 6

Overrun by Spurs’s attack who looked dangerous every time they went forward.

Paddy McNair – 6

Dragged out of position by Tottenham’s attacking play. Caused some problems with his delivery from set pieces.

Marvin Johnson – 6

Struggled massively against Giovani Lo Celso. Not equipped to play in defence against players of Tottenham's quality but tried hard.

Lewis Wing – 6

Struggled to handle the defensive side of the game as Spurs dictated play.

Adam Clayton – 5

Faced a difficult night against Christian Eriksen. Dragged all over the place and will be delighted that the evening is over.

Ben Liddle – 6

A difficult game to make his Middlesbrough bow but showed some signs of promise as he looked to move the team forward on the ball.

Lukas Nmecha – 6

Provided a physical threat but gave the ball away too often. Grew into the game as it wore on and looked threatening.

Ashley Fletcher – 6

Caused some problems for Davinson Sanchez but never had much in the way of clear-cut opportunities.

Substitutes

George Saville - 8

Did well to settle down the midfield and put in some good tackles to keep Spurs at bay. Went close with a stunning effort from range before finding the net with an excellent effort.

Marcus Tavernier - 7

Played at right back after his introduction and caused problems going forward. He did, however, leave the team short of defensive cover.

Rudy Gestede - 6

Added a physical presence to the attack and caused problems.
