Middlesbrough defender Fabio is edging closer to a move to FC Nantes, according to reports emerging from France.

According to French media outlet Ouest France, Nantes are getting close to signing Fabio in a €2m deal.

Fabio was also a target for Nottingham Forest but he is looking more likely to join his twin brother (Lyon defender Rafael) in France instead.

The full-back joined Middlesbrough in 2016 after leaving Cardiff City and he has since played over 50 games for the North East club.

The former Manchester United youngster, who has also played for Queens Park Rangers, scored once in 22 games for Boro last season, helping them reach the play-offs where they were defeated in the semi-finals against Aston Villa.

Now, Fabio is heading to France, where he is going to sign a three-year contract with Nantes if this deal goes ahead.

After moving to England to join Man United in 2008, Fabio looks to be moving away from the country 10 years later.

The Verdict

Fabio was a decent back-up choice at Boro but there are better options out there.

€2m is a decent fee to recoup for the versatile defender and it needs to be reinvested in his replacement.

Nantes is also a good career move for Fabio, who needs a fresh break elsewhere to really kick on.
