Middlesbrough could make a late swoop to sign Blackburn midfielder Conor Mahoney, according to the Sun.

Mahoney is all set to leave Rovers following their relegation to League One, and the 20-year-old has appeared all set for a move to Nottingham Forest, with strong rumours across various sources claiming a deal was almost done.

However, with Garry Monk and Boro looking set to miss out on Liverpool winger Ryan Kent ,Boro could now opt to move for Mahoney and rival Forest for the highly rated winger.

Mahoney made a big impression last season as he broke into the team at Ewood Park, and although his form was not enough to see the club stave off relegation, he did enough to suggest he is ready to carve out a long career in the Championship.

Forest completed the signing of Jason Cummings yesterday, while Boro are also interested in signing Leeds United midfielder Liam Bridcutt.

Both clubs will be looking to be challenging in and around the top six next season, as Boro look to seal a return to the Premier League while Forest seek a vast improvement on last season's relegation fight.
