Middlesbrough are set to beat bitter rivals, Newcastle United, in the race to sign Liverpool’s Sheyi Ojo this summer, according to the Mirror’s live blog (11/7, 16:51).

The two North East clubs had been competing to sign the talented 20-year-old, but a season-long loan to the Riverside Stadium is now looking the most likely deal.

Rafa Benitez and Newcastle have struggled to negotiate a deal with Liverpool, who are keen for Ojo to spend the 2017/18 campaign out on-loan.

Ojo has made just 13 senior appearances for Liverpool, and only featured twice in the FA Cup last season for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Liverpool don’t want Ojo to leave permanently, but he is set to link-up with Boro for his third loan spell away from Anfield.

Ojo will add to Garry Monk’s already talented squad at the Riverside Stadium, who many expect to be competing at the top of the Sky Bet Championship table next season.

Monk was only appointed as Boro’s manager last month, but has already made positive changes to his playing squad.

Jonny Howson has arrived at the Riverside Stadium from Norwich City, whilst Boro have also moved to secure the service of Cyrus Christie, who arrived from Derby County.
