The 20-year-old is rated very highly amongst staff at Chelsea and manager Jose Mourinho is keen for the player to get more first-team experience; with Kurt Zouma, Gary Cahill and John Terry all above him in the Stamford Bridge pecking order.

Ake spent a month on loan at Reading last season, making five appearances for the club before returning to Chelsea and breaking into the first-team.

Boro manager Aitor Karanka sees the Netherlands U21 international as a perfect addition to his squad as he looks to build on a great season which saw them reach the Championship play-off final.

The Teeside club lost out on a place in the Premier League after a 2-0 defeat by Norwich at Wembley, and Karanka is keen to add versatile Ake, who can play centre-back, left-back and midfield; to his squad at the Riverside as they mount another promotion push next year.
