Dimi Konstantopoulos has signed a contract extension with Boro.

According to the Middlesbrough's official site, he will stay at the club for an extra season. The 39-year-old goalkeeper has been back-up to Darren Randolph this season.

He is yet to play a league game in the current season and has been restricted to three appearances in the Carabao Cup.

This is his fifth season for the club in what has been a largely positive spell. He was involved the disappointing play-off defeat to Norwich City in 2015, but that was followed by promotion to the Premier League the year after. Although they were unable to stay in the top division for more than one season.

The Verdict

His importance to the club is more subtle than what he does on the pitch. He has substantial experience through the sheer amount of games he has been involved in throughout his career.

During his time at Boro, he has been involved in major highs and lows, so he understands what is needed to get in and stay in the Premier League, which is a vital quality to have.

The experience he brings to the team enables them to deal with disappointing results or a bad run of form because of the mentality he can help instil. Tony Pulis has clearly identified that quality, which is a key part of his teams, because he prefers to have the wise nature of older players rather than youthful exuberance.
