Middlesbrough are poised to make a late entry into the race to sign St Mirren midfielder Jamie McGrath before the transfer window comes to a close, according to the Scottish Sun’s live transfer blog.

McGrath has been a player in a lot of demand this summer following his excellent form for St Mirren in the Scottish Premier League last term.

The 24-year-old managed to register an impressive 17 goals in all competitions last season and already has scored once in his three appearances this campaign.

During the summer transfer window, it is thought that all three of Sheffield United, Watford and Aberdeen have expressed an interest in potentially securing a deal with St Mirren for McGrath.

The latest report from The Scottish Sun now reveals that Middlesbrough are set to potentially make a move for McGrath. That comes with Neil Warnock thought to have been tracking the midfielder ahead of a late swoop for him.

St Mirren are believed to have already rejected bids for the midfielder this summer. Middlesbrough are now thought to be ready to also come in with an offer to tempt them into selling him before the transfer deadline.

The verdict

This could be an excellent potential signing for Middlesbrough and McGrath would add real extra quality to their midfield options if he were to arrive.

The 24-year-old is a player that it is surprising to see still with his current club after all of the transfer interest in him this summer so far, but there is every chance he could leave before the window shuts.

It is clear that Middlesbrough need to get more goals into the side anyway that they can and McGrath would be able to provide a real extra goal threat from the middle of the park for them.

He has a knack for arriving into the box at the right time and taking advantage with his finishing abilities.

It would be exciting to see how he would get on in the Championship and whether he could repeat his goalscoring exploits from last term with Middlesbrough.

Having been left frustrated over moves for a couple of key transfer targets, Middlesbrough will be determined to ensure that they manage to agree a deal with St Mirren for McGrath. It could be an excellent addition if they manage to get this one over the line.
