Middlesbrough have announced via their official website that over 4,700 fans will travel to Barnsley on Saturday to see Boro take on the Tykes.

Sitting in eleventh place with a tally of sixteen points, a win could put the Teessiders within touching distance of the play-offs, and manager Garry Monk will be keen to return to winning ways having drawn at home to Brentford prior to the international break.

The former Leeds United boss spent big this summer in his attempt to turnaround the fortunes of the club, who had been relegated from the Premier League following just a single season in the top flight.

Fans will flock in their thousands to south Yorkshire on Saturday to see their side in action, and nothing less than three points will be expected by Monk and the travelling hordes.

The Verdict

Middlesbrough have an avid fan base who like to travel, but taking nearly 5000 away in the Championship remains an impressive achievement.

The 170 mile round trip is likely to be one of the shortest trips of the season for Boro, so fans will have been expected to travel in great numbers, but Monk and his players will be delighted with the support they are expected to receive at the weekend.

The club remain one of the favourites for promotion despite their inconspicuous start to the new campaign, but victory on Saturday would put them firmly back in the hunt for the title.
