Middlesbrough have entered the race for Paddy McNair by submitting a bid in excess of £5m for his services, according to Sky Sports News.

McNair is a man in-demand this summer and Boro want to win the race for the midfielder by raiding local neighbours Sunderland for his signature.

Sunderland have turned down multiple bids for the former Manchester United youngster, with the last said to be a £3.5m offer from Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion.

The Black Cats also turned down a £3.75m bid from a London side who remain unnamed.

Now Middlesbrough have entered the race for the Northern Ireland international, who shone for a poor Sunderland side last season.

Despite Sunderland finishing bottom, McNair earned plenty of plaudits for emerging as a first-team star, netting five goals in 18 games for his side.

This has attracted the attention of a number of sides and Sunderland seem resigned to losing him.

But the League One side will hold out for a £7m fee with Premier League new boys Wolves are also keen.

Middlesbrough are hoping to bolster their midfield options next season and McNair is a target as they wait to hear back about their £5m bid.

The Verdict

With Grant Leadbitter departing, McNair is the perfect long-term replacement to come in for him.

The 23-year-old is young and improving with each game he plays and he has already proven his quality at Championship level.

As he is comfortable playing as a right-back or as a centre-half too, McNair is a useful versatile option for Tony Pulis to have in his squad.
