Tony Pulis' Middlesbrough have emerged as candidates to sign Aston Villa's World Cup star Birkir Bjarnason, according to reports via Birmingham Live.

Several Italian clubs are also thought to be pursuing the 30-year old, who struggled to make an impact at Villa Park last season. He almost secured a switch to Italy in January, before staying put to fight for his place.

Icelandic star Bjarnason is one of several Villa players likely to leave this summer, with the club looking to cash in on their assets in order to ease their financial crisis.

Bjarnason appeared in all three of his country's matches at this year's World Cup, but struggled to make an impact for Steve Bruce.

He was an unused sub as Villa floundered at the final hurdle against Fulham in the play offs, having played in both legs of the semi-final win against Middlesbrough.

Bjarnason started his career with Viking, but has enjoyed spells in Italy with Pescara and Sampdoria, as well as playing for FC Basel of Switzerland prior to his Villa switch in 2017.

The Verdict

Bjarnason is a proven Championship midfielder with lots to offer and would be a sound signing for Tony Pulis, as well as a cost-effective one.

He was used far too sparingly for Aston Villa and despite not impressing over in Russia, there will be no shortage of suitors over the coming weeks.
