Middlesbrough have joined the chase for Martyn Waghorn, according to reports.

According to The Yorkshire Post, Middlesbrough will battle Sheffield United and Derby County for Ipswich Town's Waghorn as they look to sign a new striker.

Middlesbrough forward Patrick Bamford is on the verge of sealing a switch to Leeds United in a deal which could be worth about £10m.

If Boro lose the former Chelsea striker, they need to dip into the market for a replacement and are eyeing Waghorn.

The 28-year-old netted 16 goals and provided 11 assists for the Tractor Boys last season but is keen on a move.

Derby want to sign him to compete with Jack Marriott up front, while Sheffield United are hoping he will join them instead.

Boro are also considering a swoop for Iceland international striker Vidar Orn Kjartansson, who currently plays for Maccabi Tel Aviv, but face competition from Queens Park Rangers and West Bromwich Albion for the 28-year-old.

The Verdict

Waghorn had an excellent season and he would enjoy more success at Middlesbrough with the service he would get from their midfield players.

Alongside Britt Assombalonga, Waghorn could help spearhead a promotion bid for Boro.

If they can sell Bamford for £10m and get Waghorn for half the price, then this is shrewd business by Tony Pulis.
