Middlesbrough have come out in full support of defender Cyrus Christie, after he was subject to awful racist abuse and threats following Ireland's defeat to Denmark in the World Cup play-off.

The ex-Derby man revealed on his twitter account that he had suffered abuse and the club have today released a statement condemning the people behind it.

Part of the statement on the official site read; “MFC takes a strong stance against this type of behaviour and believes Cyrus deserves great credit for speaking out.”

“We hope that the authorities involved in the investigation will find the culprits, bring them to justice, and send out a clear message that this type of behaviour is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”

Christie revealed that comments had been made to him over the past few months after playing for his country and as recently as after the Denmark tie.

He also added that he believes the Irish fans are among the best in the world and how proud he is when he pulls on the green shirt.

The Verdict

It's disgusting that Christie has been subject to this and he does deserve full credit for bringing this to light as hopefully those behind it will be caught and dealt with.

He will appreciate the support of his club with the statement and the fellow professionals who have publicly backed him on social media.

There's no place for this in society and it's good to see so many people support Christie.
