Middlesbrough are favourites to sign former Cardiff attacker Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, according to Sky Sports.

Mendez-Laing had his Bluebirds contract terminated in September with immediate effect, although the South Wales outfit decided against commenting the reasons behind the decision.

The former Portsmouth and Peterborough player hasn't featured competitively since the play-off second leg against Fulham back in July, but could be set for a move to Cardiff's Championship rivals Middlesbrough.

Quiz: Who has done more of these 15 things out of Cardiff City and Swansea City?

Sky Sports believe that Neil Warnock's team are in pole position to sign Mendez-Laing, who scored 14 times in 92 appearances for the Bluebirds before his contract was ripped up prior to the start of the campaign.

Derby are also interested in the attacker, but Mendez-Laing himself would favour a move to the Riverside Stadium which would see him link-up with former Cardiff boss Warnock, who previously signed him from Rochdale back in 2017.

The Verdict

Considering Mendez-Laing has been unattached for more than four months, securing another Championship move would be an excellent outcome for the player himself.

And having played some of the best football of his career under Warnock, including a brief stint in the Premier League, it therefore doesn't come as a major shock that Mendez-Laing wants to reunite with the Boro boss.

As for Middlesbrough, on a free transfer, it would be a shrewd piece of business and only improve what is an already dangerous frontline.
