Middlesbrough missed out on the permanent signing of Muhamed Besic on deadline day but they still want to sign him on loan, according to The Northern Echo.

Boro had a deal lined up to sign Besic on a permanent deal for £6m on deadline day but the move broke down over agent fees being paid to the midfielder's representatives.

Besic spent last season on loan at The Riverside Stadium and impressed, helping them to the play-offs in the Championship with some box-to-box midfield displays.

The Bosnia and Herzegovina international has been in England since joining Everton in 2014, playing a total of 56 games for the Toffees.

But he is surplus to requirements at Goodison Park and they were ready to sanction his permanent sale.

After the disappointment of deadline day, Middlesbrough are hoping to sign the 25-year-old on another loan deal to bolster their midfield options ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.

The Verdict

Besic would be a superb signing on loan for Boro and improve their hopes of promotion.

He is familiar with the players, the fans love him and he is a very good Championship standard player.

With his engine in midfield, there will be fewer defensive midfielders that are better than him in this division.
