Jonathan Woodgate has said that Lewis Wing and Britt Assombalonga could both return to face Swansea City this weekend.

Wing hasn't featured since the 4-0 defeat against Leeds United after suffering a knee injury in training.

While the injury is not thought to be serious, it has allowed Adam Clayton to get some gametime in the centre of midfield where he has certainly impressed.

As for Assombalonga, the striker has been struggling with injury for a couple of weeks.

The 27-year-old was struggling with an ankle injury, but picked up a fresh knock in the 1-0 victory over Charlton Athletic at the weekend.

He then joined Lewis Wing on the sidelines for Tuesday night's clash with Nottingham Forest, but speaking after the game Jonathan Woodgate said that while both players aren't ready yet, they could prove themselves in time for the weekend.

How much do you remember about Middlesbrough's season so far? Let's find out!

Speaking after the 1-1 draw, as quoted by Teesside Live, Woodgate said: "We're not sure yet about Britt, we'll find out in the next 48 hours but he will be touch and go for Swansea. Let's see.

“Lewis could be in contention for Saturday maybe, let's see how he is. Let's see how he trains in the next 72 hours.

“We’ll have to see for Saturday. It’ll depend on who’s back fit and which players we’ve got.”

The verdict

Middlesbrough will certainly be hoping that Lewis Wing and Britt Assombalonga can be fit for the weekend.

The injuries are really piling up at the Riverside Stadium and the hope will be that some experienced players will provide a welcome boost to the young Teessiders.

Of course it's crucial not to rush them back, but the sooner the influential pair return, the better.
