Middlesbrough forward Marcus Tavernier has today signed a new three-and-a-half year contract, keeping him at the club until at least 2023.

The 20-year-old has featured 26 times in all competitions so far this term, scoring two goals and chipping in with three assists for Jonathan Woodgate's men.

Tavernier has been a regular feature for Boro this term, playing in a variety of positions including left-wing, attacking midfield and as a striker.

The 20-year-old has been with the Riverside club since 2013, having joined their academy at 14 and breaking into the first team in 2017.

Following a brief loan spell at MK Dons in the second half of the 2017-2018 season, Tavernier went on to make 30 appearances for Middlesbrough in the Championship last season.

On the 20-year-old's new deal, head coach Jonathan Woodgate told the club's official media channels that: "I’m over the moon Tav has signed a new contract. He was a player I was keen to get tied up as soon as we could because of what he brings to the team."

"He’s had a good run of games this season and I think people can now see what he’s about," continued Woodgate, "I don’t want people standing still, I want them hungry to improve all the time."

Tavernier has made 61 appearances for Boro's first team since 2017, and will be hoping to celebrate with a victory when his side entertain Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.

The Verdict

Tavernier has been a regular feature under Jonathan Woodgate this season and it is no surprise to see the 20-year-old be rewarded with a new contract.

Woodgate is clearly a big fan of the versatile man and judging by his comments is eager to see the player improve.

The deal does make sense to Boro as it ties Tavernier to the club until at least 2023, and should any side come in for him over the next season or two, Boro should hold all the cards.

After an awful start to the 2019-2020 season, things have started to look up for Woodgate's men and this deal will go a long way in restoring some faith from the fans into the club.
