The verdict

A new contract for Jonny Howson has to be a priority for Middlesbrough.

The midfielder has arguably been Jonathan Woodgate's best player so far this term as his performances in defence and midfield have helped the club out of trouble.

Of course an agreement will depend on finances but given his importance to the team it's crucial that Howson is retained.

In addition, the sooner that deals can be agreed with Aynsley Pears and Djed Spence the better.

Both players will be attracting admiring glances and so it's in the club's best interests to get them tied down.
