Middlesbrough recently appointed former player, Jonathan Woodgate, as their new boss ahead of the latest campaign.

The ex Real Madrid player got his first taste of victory on Tuesday night as Boro beat Wigan Athletic 1-0 at the Riverside.

It was a much needed result for the new boss having failed to win any of his first three Championship games. His side also crashed out of the Carabao Cup on penalties against League Two side Crewe.

Woodgate played for Middlesbrough during two spells in his career before coming back as a coach at various times under the different tenures.

The 39-year-old is trying to change the club's style of play hoping that alongside that, success can be found within the club. Many Boro fans were disgruntled last season with the lack of attacking football on display despite having a lot of players who could play that brand of football.

After Tony Pulis was sacked, Middlesbrough decided to go for a different approach and appointed Woodgate, who was Pulis' first-team assistant coach beforehand.

It's an appointment that got many Boro fans excited over the summer period due to the little details about Woodgate. He is from the area, and an avid supporter. One would assume he would have the club's best interests at heart the whole time he is at the club.

Another reason why supporters were excited was due to the fact that he vowed to play an attacking brand of football in his first interview as manager. He said he'd aim to get fans off their seats.

That was certainly the case in Boro's opener away at Luton Town. In what was a classic, the game ended 3-3, but Woodgate would have felt it was a missed opportunity to pick up three points after Britt Assombalonga blazed over his penalty instead of making it 2-4 at that point in the game.

That is the type of matches that the fans had been crying out for. End to end, fast paced attacking football, with some real quality on display at the same time. They have to stay with him, and get behind him if they're to succeed.

Having lost the last two games before Tuesday night's victory against Wigan, Woodgate issued a rallying cry where he wanted the supporters to buy into the long-term goal that he was trying to create at the Riverside.

Woodgate has a great opportunity to build something in Middlesbrough. Something that the club hasn't had in many a year - even when they last got promoted. If he can get a solid foundation and push on from there, the fans will love him as well as the football they could play. In order to get to that stage though, the supporters must stick with him and help him succeed.
