Middlesbrough are one of the clubs hoping to take experienced forward Nahki Wells on loan, as reported by Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie.

They're hoping to seal a temporary deal for the 29-year-old Bermudan international, who spent last season on loan with Queens Park Rangers.

The Hoops have been linked with another move for the Burnley forward, as have Championship rivals Birmingham City. Swansea have also tabled a bid for the in-demand striker, who scored nine times in 43 outings for Steve McClaren's side last season.

Wells made his name playing for Bradford City, featuring in the side that went on a remarkable run and appeared in the EFL Cup final whilst still a League Two side back in 2013. That earned him a move to Huddersfield, whom he helped to Premier League promotion in 2017.

He swapped the Terriers for the Clarets, joining Burnley after the promotion-winning season, but has struggled to impose himself on their first-team picture. He's made just 10 appearances for his parent club, without registering a goal.

This summer he represented his country in CONCACAF Gold Cup, scoring two goals in three outings.

The Verdict

This is an odd one for Boro in my opinion. Wells is a reliable striker, but I'm not sure he's 'top of the table' material. If Boro want to push on I'd suggest they need better quality than this coming in.

Birmingham, Swansea and QPR will, with the greatest respect, be outside the top ten unless they over-achieve, but Boro will expect to be around the top six.

That should see them making more ambitious moves for younger, more effective players. after all, nine goals in 43 last season isn't inspiring in the slightest.
