Middlesbrough have entered advanced talks to sign Norwich City’s Jonny Howson, reports Sky Sports’ Keith Downie.

Howson has been at Carrow Road since January 2012, and has impressed in both the Premier League and Sky Bet Championship for the Canaries, but is understood to want to move back to the north of England.

Norwich were keen to offer the 29-year old a new contract, but the midfielder has turned down the offer, which has left them reluctantly listening to offers.

Leeds United, the club who sold Howson to Norwich, were linked with a move for the midfielder, but the Yorkshire Evening Post’s Phil Hay has revealed it was never a deal the Whites gave too much consideration to.

Boro’s North-East rivals, Sunderland, were also reportedly interested in Howson, but it appears Garry Monk has won the race to sign the experienced 29-year old.

Howson has a wealth of Championship experience, and played a major role in Norwich’s promotion campaign during the 2014/15 season, when the Canaries won the play-offs under Alex Neil.

The Canaries endured a difficult 2016/17 campaign, but Howson still produced some fine individual displays, featuring on 38 occasions, scoring six goals and adding a further seven assists.
