Middlesbrough’s search for a goalkeeper is set to continue for a little while longer yet, with new boss Garry Monk scouring the market, having lost both Victor Valdes and Dimi Konstantopoulos already this summer.

Boro have been linked with a move for young Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone in recent days, but several clubs are interested in the shot stopper, with Aston Villa keeping close tabs on the situation of their former loan man.

There are several good goalkeepers on the market this summer, and Middlesbrough should perhaps consider a bid for Newcastle’s Rob Elliot, who could be on the move after playing second fiddle to Karl Darlow last season.

The Magpies also have Tim Krul returning from a loan spell in his native Holland, so the likelihood is that Elliot won’t even see the field next season.

The London-born stopper began his career at Charlton, and a string of impressive performances convinced Newcastle to bring the player to St James’ Park.

Having been capped by Ireland four times, Elliot will feel becoming a number one will boost his chances of an Irish recall, and Middlesbrough could offer a short term deal to the player if Newcastle are willing to part with him.

Boro need to bounce back to the Premier League where they will attract a more long term goalkeeping option, and Elliot is good enough to help Boro achieve this goal.
