Middlesbrough have today confirmed that young goalkeeper Joe Fryer has joined Carlisle United on a season-long loan.

Boro are looking strong to challenge for promotion once again this coming season.

Whilst they've kept many key players so far, the likes of Aden Flint have joined the club to suggest that Boro are feeling ambitious once again for 2018/19.

Younger players, then, might be better off going out on loan and getting experience elsewhere and that is evidently the plan with young Fryer:

Carlisle will once again be looking to challenge for promotion from League Two this season.

A late challenge for the playoffs eventually fell short in one of the most tightly contested leagues in the country last year.

Things in the fourth tier can quickly change, though, and so they and Fryer will hope his arrival is a step towards getting into the top seven.

The Verdict

A good signing for all involved.

Boro see one of their young players move out on loan, Carlisle get a hungry player eager to prove himself and Fryer himself gets all important minutes.

He's got a year ahead of him at Brunton Park and will be looking to make an impression as soon as possible.
