Southampton attacking midfielder Gaston Ramirez is set to complete a move to Sky Bet Championship leaders Middlesbrough, according to Uruguayan publication Ovacion.
The 25-year-old, joined Southampton in a £12m deal in 2012, has struggled for game time in recent seasons and has made just over 50 appearances for the club in four seasons.
He spent the 2014-15 season on loan with then Premier League side Hull City, but struggled to establish himself at the KC Stadium as the club were relegated to the Championship.
However, with his contract set to expire in the summer, Ramirez looks set to leave St Marys’ this month and Boro were one of a number of sides interested.
A club insider has confirmed to Football League World that Ramirez began talks with Middlesbrough on Friday as he looks for a move away from the south coast, with manager Aitor Karanka looking to boost his promotion-chasing squad.
Ramirez, who would be joining fellow Uruguayans Cristhian Stuani, Carlos De Pena as well as goalkeeping coach Leo Percovich should he move to the Riverside, can play anywhere behind the striker and would fit perfectly into Aitor Karanka’s side.
Middlesbrough are currently top of the Championship and find themselves two points ahead of second-placed Hull City, with a game in hand over the Tigers.
