Middlesbrough are closing in on the loan capture of Everton defender Cuco Martina, according to reliable journalist Pete O'Rourke.

The 28-year-old joined Everton last summer and is comfortable operating in any position across the back four.

After playing 28 games for the Toffees, including 21 in the Premier League, Martina is set for a move to the Championship, where he will join Boro on a temporary deal.

The 37-cap Curacao international joined Everton from Southampton and has previously played for FC Twente in Holland.

While with the Saints, he played 36 games across two seasons on the south coast.

Martina is not the only Everton player expected to make a loan switch to Middlesbrough today, with Tony Pulis' men set to beat Leeds United to midfielder Mo Besic.

The Verdict

Martina is a cheap and experienced option and he adds depth to Boro's defence.

Naturally a right-back, he is also capable of playing at left-back so he can provide back-up for first-choice pairing Ryan Shotton and George Friend at full-back.

Martina has also played at centre-half before and his experience will stand him in good stead to make an impact in the Championship.
