Middlesbrough are set to complete the signing of Duncan Watmore and it could be finalised as early as today.

The versatile forward has been a free agent for the past few months after leaving Sunderland and he has been training with Neil Warnock's side over the past few weeks as he looked to win a deal.

And, he has made a positive impression on the experienced boss who revealed yesterday that he has been pleased with what he's seen from the 26-year-old.

So, a deal always seemed likely but Boro have been forced to accelerate things to get this sorted after rival interest emerged from East Bengal, who are managed by Robbie Fowler.

Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie explained how that prompted Boro to make an offer to Watmore and he claimed it could all be sorted this afternoon.

"Duncan Watmore is set to sign a short-term deal with Middlesbrough - possibly today - after Robbie Fowler’s East Bengal offered the forward a contract."

The attacker will be joining up with a Boro side that are currently in the play-off places and he will offer Warnock much needed depth up top after Ashley Fletcher's injury.

The verdict

This has been on the cards as Watmore has been working with Boro for a few weeks and he's obviously done enough to convince Warnock and the staff he can play a part this season.

If he can stay fit, he should be an asset to the team and his work-rate and determination makes him the ideal fit for the Boro boss.

So, hopefully he can avoid injuries in the future and if he does this could turn out to be a shrewd bit of business from the Teesside outfit.
