It's a big season for Middlesbrough this time around. Beaten in the play-offs, they're going to be pushing hard to go one better. If they don't, financial hardship could be heading their way.

After just missing out last season, Tony Pulis will be hoping his brand of football is enough to see them through this time around. The task doesn't get any easier though, Blackburn and Wigan are both ambitious in rising from League One and the likes of Aston Villa and Derby will not take disappointment lightly. Then there's the teams dropping out of the top flight, all with the remit to bounce back straight away.

What Boro need is a summer of positive moves, players coming in who can make a difference and settle fans down. The events over at Aston Villa will serve as a sharp warning of getting things wrong this time around.

Here, FLW have a look at three players who could kick start the summer for the Boro, none of which will see them following Steve Bruce's beleaguered side along their dangerous route.

This looks likely to happen in the next few hours and it is a great start to the summer business.

Boro must make sure there are no late hitches, McNair is a quality defender and may just be coming in to replace the much-coveted Ben Gibson.

Either way, it's a crucial signing.

Besic spent time on loan at Boro last season and may well be open to a return to the Riverside next time around.

He looks unlikely to make an impact at Everton, but under Pulis he was growing into the player many hoped he would. A return would signal the club's desirability as a destination for players.

Forest are looking to attract their loan talent back permanently, it says a lot about the environment as much as anything. If they could secure Besic, it would be a ringing endorsement of Tony Pulis and his culture.

Everyone else is being linked with him, so why not Boro?

This guy oozes goals from every pore and whoever he does sign for will be getting double figures, absolutely no doubt. He's the one player they're all after, so if Boro could sweep in and secure a deal for Marriott, they'd be giving fans a huge boost ahead of a testing season.
