Middlesbrough announce deal for 22-y/o as transfer deadline approaches

Middlesbrough have completed the signing of Harold Moukoudi from AS Saint Etienne.

The defender arrives on a loan deal until the end of the season.

The 22-year-old Cameroon international is highly-rated by the French side after arriving at the club last summer but the decision has been made to allow him more first team football.

Jonathan Woodgate has made no secret of his desire to bring in a defender before the end of the transfer window and described the signing of Moukoudi as ‘a coup’.

Speaking to the Middlesbrough website, Woodgate said: “We’re delighted to bring Harold in to the club. He’s a player we’ve been keeping an eye on and it’s a real coup that we’ve been able to bring him here.

“He’s a unit of a defender, a real big, strong lad, and he’s a quality player. He’s still young, but he has plenty of experience, having played in the top division in France, in the Europa League, and also for Cameroon.

“He’ll be a very important addition to our squad and will really increase the competition we have for places.”

The verdict

Middlesbrough will be thrilled to sign a player of the calibre of Harold Moukoudi.

The Teessiders have made no secret of their desire to add a defender to the ranks this month with injuries to George Friend, Ryan Shotton and Daniel Ayala limiting the options available.

Moukoudi is certainly highly-rated after reportedly being linked with a host of other clubs, and the hope will be that he can show his quality at the Riverside Stadium.

It will also be a big relief to get the deal done with time to spare on the 11pm deadline.
