Middlesbrough and Sunderland set for transfer tug-of-war over Ghanaian winger

North east rivals Middlesbrough and Sunderland are set to go head-to-head over the signing of Ghanaian winger, Edwin Gyasi.

The Daily Mail reports that the 26-year-old winger has been attracting the attentions of both clubs in recent weeks, and both sides are locked in talks with the player.

Born in Holland, Gyasi began his career with AZ Alkmaar before bouncing around the Eredivisie, eventually ending up with Norwegian side Aalesund in 2016.

A revelation in the Tippeligaen since his move, Gyasi has registered twelve goals in fifty-two appearances, and appears ready to make the switch to the higher level.

The player is said to be available for around £600,000 plus add-ons, with both sides keen to add to their attacking options in the new year.

The Verdict

Gyasi appears to be a talented player with bags of ability, and his pace could prove to be an exciting weapon in the attacking arsenals of either side.

Boro are loaded with talent on the wings, but with the future of Adama Traore a constant talking point, the former Barcelona youngster could be on his way out of the club in the new year to one of Europe’s top five leagues.

Gyasi could be earmarked by the club as Traore’s replacement, and a much-needed boost ahead of Tony Pulis’ side’s push for the top-six.

Sunderland are in desperate need of new options as they look to move away from the relegation spots, with Chris Coleman’s side out of the relegation zone by goal difference alone.

Gyasi could be the spark that the Black Cats need, and both managers will battle hard for the player’s signature when the transfer window opens for business.
