Middlesbrough are hot on the trail of some new strikers this summer.

With Britt Assombalonga and Ashley Fletcher set to move on - not to mention the uncertainty regarding Chuba Akpom's future - it seems that recruiting a new attacker will be a real priority.

A number of players have been linked with a move to the club, including Michael Smith.

So what do we know about the club's pursuit of the Rotherham United striker, and how likely is it that a deal will be done?

Let's take a look.

What do we know so far?

Reports from the Northern Echo have claimed that Michael Smith is one of a number of strikers on the club's radar.

The 29-year-old has enjoyed an excellent season from a personal point of view after scoring 10 and creating three for Rotherham United in a difficult season for the club.

The Millers ended up getting relegated and with just one year remaining on his contract, it means that the club are braced for summer interest in their talisman.

Is it likely to happen?

While it's hard to predict if Michael Smith will end up at Middlesbrough, it certainly seems like a link that has legs.

Middlesbrough are clearly on the hunt for at least two new strikers and so it's definitely plausible that the Rotherham United striker would be a target.

Given his form for the Millers there's no doubt that the 29-year-old will be attracting interest, but it remains to be seen whether Paul Warne will allow the player to leave the club as they prepare for a promotion push next term.
