Last season, Aiden McGeady was the star in Preston North End’s side as they fell narrowly short of finishing in the top six.
McGeady was on loan from Everton and he had been targeted by Preston for a permanent move.
With Preston keen to sign McGeady, the player happy to move and Everton ready to sell, the move seemed to be a formality.
However, wages have proved to be a stumbling block and McGeady is unsure about taking a substantial wage cut from his current £40k per week payment.
Preston’s Championship rivals Middlesbrough are now looking to swoop ahead and complete a deal, reports the Irish Independent.
Boro were recently relegated from the Championship and have stronger financial backing to complete a deal for the Republic of Ireland international.
This could be a shrewd move by Middlesbrough; McGeady seemed to have found his level in the Championship last season after struggling to get much playing time at Everton.
The versatile attacking midfielder, who can play on either flank or through the middle, racked up eight goals and nine assists in the Championship last season and would be a good addition to Boro’s goal-shy attacking options.
Middlesbrough have held an interest in the 31-year-old since before appointing Garry Monk so the move is dependent on whether he gives the deal the green light.
