Middlesbrough have agreed a deal to sign Ryan Shotton from Birmingham City, sources close to TEAMtalk are claiming.

According to this exclusive report by TEAMtalk, Middlesbrough have agreed a £2m fee to sign Ryan Shotton.

Boro are set to finalise this deal and bring in their defender target to strengthen their options at the back.

Daniel Ayala and Ben Gibson started on the weekend but Gibson's future is undecided yet and youngster Dael Fry was the back-up option at the weekend.

As a result, they have swooped to agree a deal with Birmingham for Shotton.

The 28-year-old has Premier League experience from his time at Stoke City and he has also played for Derby County in his career.

Middlesbrough are now expected to complete this deal soon as the 6ft 3in centre half prepares to travel to Teeside for a medical and to hold discussions over personal terms.

Birmingham City, on the other hand, have been preparing for the inevitable departure of Ryan Shotton.

Speaking in late July, Harry Redknapp confirmed that Shotton's head was turned by the speculation and that he wanted to leave.

Redknapp told Birmingham's official website at the time:

"We've had an offer from a club earlier in the week and I think he would like to move if he gets the opportunity."

The Verdict

If this price is accurate, Ryan Shotton for £2m is a snip in today's market.

Given their lack of strength in depth at the back, Middlesbrough could do with bringing in this towering centre back, who can also play at right back.

After impressing for Birmingham last season, the 28-year-old would be a valuable and experienced addition to Boro's ranks for this level.

As for Birmingham, selling Shotton and signing Aden Flint (if it happens) is not bad business either.
