Darren Randolph is set to undergo minor abdominal surgery this summer, with the Middlesbrough goalkeeper set to miss out on international duty.

The Boro goalkeeper has been in impressive form during his debut season at the Riverside Stadium, with Randolph earning a place in the Republic of Ireland’s squad for their post-season friendlies.

Ireland take on France and the USA in the coming weeks, with Randolph set to be involved for Martin O’Neil’s side.

However, Middlesbrough’s official website have confirmed that the 31-year-old requires surgery on an abdominal problem, which has forced him to withdraw from the squad.

Randolph joined Middlesbrough in a £5m deal last summer, with the goalkeeper featuring regularly under both Garry Monk and Tony Pulis, as Boro finished fifth in the Championship.

The 31-year-old was ever-present for Boro in the Championship, making 50 appearances across all competitions for the Teessiders.

Despite Randolph’s heroics in the play-off semi-final clash with Aston Villa, Boro suffered a 1-0 aggregate defeat to Steve Bruce’s side last Tuesday, leaving them facing another year of Championship football.

The Verdict

For Randolph, missing out on the opportunity to represent his country is a huge blow, as his performances this season have deserved it.

However, from Middlesbrough’s point of view, they need the goalkeeper fit ahead of next season.

The 31-year-old’s surgery coming early in the summer gives him the opportunity to get fit for the 2018/19 campaign, which will be a big one for Pulis and Boro.
