According to TuttoMercatoWeb, Benfica are interested in signing Gaston Ramirez from Middlesbrough this summer, following the club’s relegation to the Sky Bet Championship.
Ramirez had wanted to leave the Riverside Stadium in January, and his time with Boro is now set to come to an end this summer, with Portuguese Champions interested in signing the midfielder.
The 26-year old arrived at Boro on-loan from Southampton during the 2016 January transfer window, and played a major role in helping the club achieve promotion to the Premier League later that season, making 18 appearances.
During those 18 appearances, Ramirez scored seven goals, as Boro finished runners-up to Burnley in the Championship.
Ramirez’s impact in the Premier League was not as impressive following a permanent move, with the Uruguayan making just 24 league appearances, and despite some dazzling displays at the start of the season, he could not help Boro avoid relegation back to the Championship.
As Boro are searching for their next permanent manager, Ramirez has expressed his desire to leave the Riverside Stadium and not help the club fight for promotion next season.
Ramirez’s only experience in the second-tier came with Boro in 2016, and losing the 26-year old will be a blow for the club, particularly after the form the midfielder showed towards the end of that campaign.
Boro fans… Would losing Ramirez be a blow? Is he good enough for Benfica? Let us know your thoughts!
