Never in any serious danger of going down, never in any serious danger of going up; it has been a pretty average season for those associated with Ipswich Town.

The former Premier League side have been extremely inconsistent under long serving manager Mick McCarthy this season, and fans will turn to the new campaign with optimism of at least a little excitement at Portman Road.

Defeat in the 3rd round of the FA Cup at the hands of non-league Lincoln City saw cries for McCarthy’s head, yet the Irishman survived and will lead the rebuilding job in Suffolk this summer.

One man who is definitely on his way out of the club is the experienced Christophe Berra, with Hearts confirming the Scotsman will move to Tynecastle at the expiration of his Ipswich deal.

Funds are set to be limited for McCarthy this summer, and the former Republic of Ireland manager may turn to free agency to find the perfect replacement for his influential centre half.

The perfect man to fill the hole left by Berra could be Bolton Wanderers’ defender, David Wheater.

The Middlesbrough academy graduate looks set to leave Bolton off the back of a fantastic season, in which the club achieved promotion back to the Championship at the first time of asking, and Wheater was named in the League One Team of the Season.

It seems that Wheater has been around forever, but still only 30 years old, the commanding defender still has much to offer.

Still capable of competing at Championship level and available on a free, McCarthy should strongly weigh up a move for the player.
