Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy has hinted at an international call-up for Sheffield United striker David McGoldrick, report the Irish Mirror

McGoldrick had fallen out of favour with former national team manager Martin O'Neill, but the experienced striker has been in great form this season and played under McCarthy at Ipswich Town.

"I looked at him the other night and it's the fittest that I’ve seen him in a long time," McCarthy said when asked if the striker could be recalled.

"He’s a good footballer and I’m not writing anybody off.”

The 31-year-old currently has five goals in 19 Championship appearances so far this season, showing an impressive resurgence under Chris Wilder.

In the previous campaign under McCarthy's stewardship at Portman Road he only managed six goals in the entire season.

Wilder's side currently sit in 6th place on 34 points, dropping points at the weekend thanks to a 1-0 loss to Leeds United at Bramall Lane, but still remain just six points behind table-toppers Norwich City.

The verdict

I am a firm believer that great form should always be rewarded when it comes to international call-ups.

McGoldrick was a favourite of McCarthy's at Portman Road so it would be no surprise at all if he were to be given another chance with the Irish side.

He has more than earned it with the form shown this season as well.
