Barnsley have had a high turnover of players over the past few years and it's fair to say that many of those signings haven't worked out.

However, one that has is the capture of Michael Sollbauer. The 30-year-old joined from Austrian outfit AC Wolfsberger to link up with Gerhard Struber again and he was crucial to keeping the Tykes in the Championship last season.

Here we will assess his time in Yorkshire and what the next steps may be...

How's it gone so far?

It's gone very well for the player and for Barnsley.

Sollbauer was a regular under Struber when he took over and he played in every game after he joined at the start of the year. The Tykes undoubtedly improved with his leadership and defensive qualities in the team.

Obviously, it was a team effort to stay in the second tier but there's no denying that the centre-back made a huge difference. He remains a regular now and has played in every game of the current campaign as well.

Barnsley quiz: Are these 10 facts about Oakwell true or false?

What issues does he face?

From the perspective of the team, they face a battle to kick on from last season and the performances in the opening month haven't convinced.

Struber's departure for New York Red Bulls prompted fears that Sollbauer could seek an exit as the Austrian coach brought him to England but he emphatically shut down those fears by recently stating how much he loves playing for Barnsley.

Like everyone, he will have to battle to be impress the new boss when they're appointed but it's hard to see the defender not having a prominent role this season no matter who is in charge.

What's next?

Those comments from the player suggest he isn't thinking of a move away and the only focus right now will be helping Barnsley up the table.

His long-term future will probably be addressed in the summer of 2021 though. Sollbauer will be 31 by then and entering the final year of his contract at Oakwell, so talks will have to take place and it will be interesting to see what happens.
