Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen has heaped praise on on-loan Leeds United forward Eddie Nketiah.

Nketiah made the temporary to Elland Road from Arsenal on the final day of the summer transfer window, and has already scored three goals in five appearances in all competitions for Marcelo Bielsa's side.

The striker has also found the net twice for England's Under 21s side in their 3-2 win over Turkey at the start of the September international break, and Owen has clearly been impressed by the progress the striker has made recently.

Speaking about Nketiah ahead of England's Under 21s game with Kosovo in a video posted on BT Sport's official Twitter account, Owen - who scored 40 goals in 89 appearances for England's senior side - said: “23 goals in 26 games at all levels for England so far. He has already scored goals for Leeds, obviously on-loan from Arsenal.

“This lad looks like he is a real top player. I was speaking to Ian Wright about him the other day, only because a lot of people were saying to me 'he plays like Ian Wright, on the shoulder'."

Assessing the strengths and weaknesses of Nketiah's game, Owen added: "He likes running in behind. He scores goals. Maybe he can improve his hold-up play.”

Nketiah went onto play 76 minutes of the match with Kosovo, which England won 2-0 thanks to a brace from Manchester City's Phil Foden.

The striker will be hoping to return to club action with Leeds on Sunday afternoon, when they make the short trip to Oakwell to face Yorkshire rivals Barnsley.

The Verdict

I do find myself agreeing with Owen here.

Nketiah has already shown during his brief time with Leeds so far just how clinical and instinctive a finisher he is, and he has previously shown that when he has been given opportunities with Arsenal as well.

I can also understand the point Owen makes about Nketiah struggling to hold up play however, although I imagine that is something that could become part of the game as he develops further in the game, both in terms of experience and physicality.

That doesn't seem to have hindered him too much so far this season however, and Leeds will be hoping that is something that continues throughout the course of the campaign.
