Rotherham United defender Michael Ihiekwe believes the team have got what it takes to achieve Championship survival this season.

The Millers are currently 22nd in the Championship table, one point from safety, with just eight matches remaining and face a serious battle to remain in the second tier.

Ihiekwe has proved himself to be a key player for the club in recent weeks, after spending the first half of this season on loan at Accrington Stanley in League One.

The centre-back been a regular in Paul Warne's starting line-up since February, with the club losing just two of the eight matches since his return to the side.

The 26-year-old believes that he and his teammates have got what it takes to beat the drop.

“We have tough fixtures, but we will work as hard as possible and hopefully we will be all right," said Ihiekwe, as quoted by the Yorkshire Post.

“You have to be like that in any walk of life. It is not plain sailing, especially in football," added the centre-half.

“Everyone will give 100 per cent for each other at this club and that is quite rare considering some of the teams I have been at in the past.”

Ihiekwe has experienced the lows of relegation previously in his career and the defender will be hoping to avoid a repeat of that experience with Rotherham this term.

“It is not a good feeling at all and then I had the opposite feeling last season. If we stay up it will be a similar feeling, of doing something that few people expected us to do," he said.

The Verdict:

They are in with a chance, but it will take a huge effort from the Rotherham players if they are to retain their Championship status this season.

With that said, you have to admire Ihiekwe's positive mindset.

The player knows what it is like to experience relegation, having dropped out of the Football League with Tranmere Rovers in 2014-15.

The centre-half will no doubt be desperate to avoid a repeat of that experience with the Millers and Rotherham fans will be hoping the player can use this as motivation to kick on for the rest of the season.
