Michael Doyle shares Man United v Leeds United memory with interesting Gary Neville take

Former Leeds United midfielder Michael Doyle has shared his memories of Leeds United’s famous FA Cup victory over Manchester United, a decade on.

It has been a decade since Leeds United, a League One side at the time, travelled to Premier League champions Manchester United and came away with one of their most famous FA Cup wins ever.

Leeds sat top of League One on 3rd January 2010 and were firm promotion favourites after three years in the third tier, whereas Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United were the reigning Premier League champions and on course for a fourth consecutive title.

Although Jermaine Beckford is the one Leeds fans sing about in regards to his goal at the Stretford End which sealed the 1-0 victory, every player in Leeds’ XI that day put in a remarkable performance.

One of the standout players that day was midfielder Michael Doyle who was on a season long loan at Elland Road that season from Coventry City.

Doyle, who is now currently at National League side Notts County, sat down with The Athletic’s Phil Hay to discuss the famous result, ten years on.

As well as recounting Beckford’s goal and a stellar performance from Robert Snodgrass, Doyle offers an interesting insight into then Leeds captain Richard Naylor’s game with then Manchester United captain Gary Neville.

“You saw a bit of that before the game. Neville and Nayls (Leeds’ captain, Richard Naylor) had to go and meet the referee in the way captains do,” Doyle told The Athletic, “I was watching them and Neville was trying to stare Nayls out. Nayls didn’t give a f***.”

He was a big Leeds fan and he was looking right back at Neville, basically saying, ‘Let’s have it, then,” Doyle added.

Leeds will look to take another cup scalp when they travel to the Emirates Stadium on Monday to face Arsenal.

How much can you remember about Leeds’ previous cup exploits?

The Verdict

Leeds fans will always look fondly on the victory on 3rd January 2010 and for those who remember it, it is a game that will live long in their memories.

It is easy to forget with the Beckford goal so many of the great stories from that day, and Leeds fans will no doubt love Michael Doyle’s recent revelations.

There will be nothing Leeds fans will love to hear more than their Leeds fan captain winding up Manchester United legend Gary Neville in the build up to kick off and it appears that the Manchester United attempts of ‘mind games’ backfired for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.
