Sheffield United’s Michael Doyle has spoken of his sadness at being released by the Sky Bet League One club.
The midfielder leaves the Blades after four-and-a-half years at Bramall Lane, during which he made 188 appearances for the Yorkshire side.
“I’m gutted. I’ve enjoyed every minute”, Doyle told BBC Radio Sheffield.
“I would have liked to have found out earlier, so I could have said goodbye to the fans properly. They’ve always shown me great respect and I hope I’ve done the same for them.
“I hoped to stay here, but I think I always knew there was a danger I wouldn’t be.”
Yet Doyle, who has one cap for the Republic of Ireland, is not letting his disappointment get in the way of pursuing a fresh start at a new club.
“It is exciting to see what else is out there. It’s a matter of seeing what the best situation is for me and my family. You never know where you might end up.”
The midfielder was an unused substitute in United’s thrilling 5-5 draw with Swindon Town on Monday night, a result that saw the club bow out of the Sky Bet League One play-offs at the semi final stage.
