Derby County owner Mel Morris has spoken out on the incredible speculation linking Wayne Rooney with a move to Derby County, via BBC reporter Charlie Slater.

Reports from the Telegraph emerged on Monday afternoon, claiming that the Rams were looking to bring the former Manchester United star to Pride Park, to become a player-coach.

The 33-year-old has been a major success over in the United States of America since signing for D.C United, scoring 23 goals in 43 games for the MLS side since joining from Everton last summer.

But one of the best ever Premier League players has now been linked with a sensational move to Derby, with Rams boss Phillip Cocu remaining coy on the speculation in his Huddersfield Town post-match press conference on Monday night.

But now, Derby owner Mel Morris has revealed to Slater that there is interest from the Rams, saying: "Part of our ambition of course is to try and be a club that is progressive and try and help younger players develop.

"This is obviously another opportunity that we are trying to get in place as well."

Derby kicked off their 2019/20 campaign with a win on Monday night, with Tom Lawrence playing an influential role in guiding the Rams to a 2-1 away win over the Terriers.

The Verdict

I still quite cannot believe that Rooney could be on his way to Derby - signing Ashley Cole last season was one thing, but this is just on another scale.

You've got to admire his determination in a way - he could easily stay in the USA to earn even more money and play in a poor league, but he seemingly wants to return to England and go into coaching.

This would be an unbelievable coup if Derby were to land him, and it's a very exciting time for the Pride Park faithful.
