Millwall are closing in on the signing of Dan Ballard on a season-long loan from Arsenal, with the player having a medical with the club today.

That's according to Football Insider, who confirm that Ballard will link up with Millwall on a season-long loan should all go to plan with regard to today's medical.

Gary Rowett will oversee the development of the defender at Millwall, although Arsenal have been keen to include a clause in the loan agreement that allows them to recall Ballard in the January transfer window.

Ballard, 21, is already a full Northern Ireland international, despite the fact that he's yet to make a breakthrough at Arsenal.

Loan stints with Swindon Town and Blackpool have elevated Ballard's potential, with his spell at Bloomfield Road proving to be particularly successful.

Ballard made 28 appearances under Neil Critchley last year in League One, including three starts in the play-offs. Ballard helped Blackpool beat Lincoln City 2-1 at Wembley last month, securing promotion back into the Championship.

Although more traditionally a centre-back, Ballard has versatility to step into a defensive midfield position too.

The Verdict

This looks like a solid piece of business for Millwall to be overseeing this summer.

Ballard's next step was always going to be up into the Championship after his impressive form in League One last season, it was just a matter of where he ended up.

Millwall will benefit from the quality he brings to a defence, with their more experienced players sure to complement the 21-year-old nicely.

All in all, it could be a deal that works out well for all parties involved.
