Barnsley have Josh Benson in for a medical ahead of his move to Oakwell from Burnley.

It's emerged in the last couple of days that Barnsley have won the race to sign Benson from Burnley, with reports suggesting that the midfielder is going to cost somewhere around the £1m mark.

Andy Giddings has reported that Benson is now set for a medical with Barnsley, with a deal agreed with Burnley that will see the midfielder swap Lancashire for South Yorkshire ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

Markus Schopp is having to evolve the Barnsley squad that he's inherited from Valerien Ismael, with Alex Mowatt a key departure from the midfield. The former Tykes skipper has followed his former manager to West Brom.

Benson, 21, has been a long-term target of Barnsley's, but the club are now on the brink of landing his service as they restrengthen their midfield options.

Over the course of his Burnley career, Benson has made six appearances in the Premier League under Sean Dyche, whilst he's also added six outings combined in the FA Cup and League Cup.

Burnley did offer Benson a chance to develop out on loan with Grimsby during the disrupted second-half of 2019/20, with the midfielder returning two goals in League Two.

The Verdict

This is a good signing for Barnsley and continues their trend of targeting young players that they can develop at Oakwell.

Losing Mowatt to West Brom is a massive blow, but in Benson, they are signing a player with plenty of potential that could be a real hit in the midfield for the Tykes.

Everything seems to be aligning this week, which will give Schopp ample time to embed his new player into his squad ahead of the new season.
